Most “real“ Lesbians don´t want to be Lesbians in the international use of the word – and in fact, most members of the female gay community are not native Lesbians – they do not even know, what a “native lesbian“ is.
Well – Lesbos is a Greek island (for Americans: Greece is in Europe) and the inhabitants are of course “Lesbians“. So as most of them do not love the same sex, they are not lesbians in the sense of the gay community, which bothers them – and they are going to court to fight for the “right“ use of the l-word.
